Frontlines of Kigali
The Rwandan Patriotic Army’s (RPA) Alpha & 59th CMF take control over the northern half of Kacyiru. General Anyidoho (UNAMIR) describes the battlefront: “the frontlines between both parties were less than 1000 metres. The situation, along the route from the Hotel Meridien to the Gendarmerie Camp in Kacyiru” (36) Kacyiru to the Meridien Roundabout through KN 5 RD reaching Chez Lando in Kissimenti and into Remera.
Withdrawal of UNAMIR
UN Security Council Resolution 912 was passed to reduce the United Nations Assistance Mission in Rwanda (UNAMIR) to 270 soldiers. Ghana keeps its 800 soldiers with General Anyidoho. This was shortly after Operation Amaryllis, which saw nearly all foreigners leave Rwanda.
Rescue Operations
The first major rescue operations occurred since RPA’s Alpha, Bravo and 59th CMF reached Kigali at St. Andre. The rescue operation occurs on April 16th. RPA continues rescue operations in Nyamirambo & other parts of Kigali.

The Genocide’s first month witnessed the removal of any opposition to the genocide regime. Despite the minor presence of UNAMIR, the RPA was the primary actor who fought against the genocide military and committed multiple rescue operations.
